City Council, which took over the space formerly known as Boxwood Tap & Grill, is a bright and welcoming Uptown bar with solid cocktails, a menu with light fare options, and a name that means business. Fortunately, the place is way less uptight than its name would suggest and manages to strike a nice balance between casual and classy.

Uptown’s City Council strikes a balance between casual and classy.

The Atmosphere: City Council is very well-lit and exudes a wholesome, friendly community feeling. The walls are mostly exposed brick with scores of hanging lightbulbs overhead. There’s a nice-sized bar with flatscreen TVs, a corner with plush couches, and plenty of tables for dining. When I visited, the outdoor patio was under construction – I was told that it was being outfitted with couches and possibly a satellite bar to give it more of a lounge feel.

What to Order: The drink selection includes beer, wine, and nine cocktails with government-flavored names like the Dirty Politician (bourb...

The City Council Restaurant and Bar in Dallas (located in the old TABC) is wrapping up the development on a dynamite brunch program, and of course you'll find the usual suspects like Bloody Mary's and mimosas paired with waffles or a traditional biscuits and gravy breakfast.

However, the real stand out here is an $8 pairing called boozy cereal.

This treat combines classic cereals with aadult milk mixes. The two that I tried recently were Cinnamon Toast Crunch with Jim Beam honey milk, and Coco Puffs mixed with a Patron XO Cafe. It's a little glass of epic.

I have to insist that you try this if you get a chance, even if you think the paring is odd -- the experience alone will blow you away.

Here are the ingredients, so if you can't make in to Uptown and you're really brave, you can try this at home.

One of Uptown’s staple buildings has a fresh new look! A new concept has opened its doors and replaced the former Boxwood T&G space: City Council Restaurant & Bar.

They aim to be a meeting-friendly space - hence the name - and their focus is on a healthy lifestyle menu along with craft cocktails and vibrant nightlife. City Council will provide State-Thomas and other neighborhood dwellers with a unique atmosphere - a sprouting tree in the middle of the lavish patio is sure to catch your attention.

You may recall that before Boxwood T&G opened, the building was home to TABC (Thomas Avenue Beverage Company) for nearly two decades. According to CultureMap Dallas, City Council owner-manager J.R. Reyna hopes to revive some of its spirit.

"One of the main things about that spot is we feel like it should be a neighborhood bar," he says. "We want to take care of the people in State Thomas. I feel like that's one of the things TABC did well, and we want to bring that back...

Perhaps you watched President Obama's final State of the Union Address recently. Maybe you even played this drinking game penned by one of our own. Or maybe you have no idea about what I'm talking about and you spent your evening watching Netflix. Either way, I'm not here to talk politics -- I'm here to talk about a bar where you can go that will make it seem like you're in-the-know ... you know, politically.

City Council Restaurant & Bar is located in Uptown Dallas and brings new meaning to the phrase, "I have a city council meeting to attend." Oh, have you never said this? Well, get ready.

The food is delicious and staff is happy to accommodate all sorts of dietary restrictions. Not only does the menu have several vegetarian and vegan options, it offers four pick-your-protein entrees that list tofu as one of the choices.

Another section of the menu vegetarians can appreciate: The cocktails. There are 10 options, including a frozen raspberry Moscow Mule. If that sound...
